Abstract
MgO nano-cubes have been successfully deposited on Si (001) substrates using a thermal evaporation method at 800 degrees C without using a catalyst. The as-synthesized products were characterized by variable pressure scanning electron microscopy (VPSEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Visible spectroscopy and BET measurements. VPSEM results showed sharp-edged of three dimensional cubes of MgO, ranging from 50 run to 300 nm in diameter. The sharp peaks in the XRD pattern indicated high crystallinity with a face centered-cubic MgO structure. The value of the optical band gap energy from the transmission spectrum was 4.86 eV, whereas the specific surface area of the MgO nano-cube was 190.1 m(2)/g.
