A novel technique for the mechanical characterization of materials near the surface using a nano-cutting process is proposed. In this technique a cutting machine cuts a layer of the specimen material, and the stresses on the shear plane and the shear angle deduced from the measured components of the cutting force are used for the characterization. The usefulness of this method is demonstrated by a cutting of poly methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) surface with a nano-cutting machine SAICAS.
