Conditions for synthesis of aluminum oxide nanopowders by electric explosion of wire in an oxygen-containing gas are described. The effect of the energy injected to the wire, the oxygen concentration in the working gas and the working gas characteristics on the specific surface area, the yield, the phase composition, the concentration of metallic aluminum and the morphology of the synthesized powders is analyzed. The characteristic size of the particles is 20 to 60 nm. The particles are spherical in shape and are slightly faceted occasionally. They have near normally logarithmic distribution. The powders are weakly aggregated and contain, in addition to metallic aluminum, only polymorphous ?- and ?-Al2O3 phases. The ratio of these phases and the concentration of metallic aluminum depend on the energy injected to the wire and released during oxidation.
