Abstract

The methods of macro and microindentation were used to estimate the mechanical properties of the developed nanocrystalline nickel. The mechanical properties such as yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, uniform elongation, and Brinell hardness determined at the macroscopic level exhibited insignificant scatter and qualitatively confirm the relative uniformity of their distribution over the entire surface of the sample. However, the determination of the microhardness characteristics by indentation and scratching revealed their substantial nonuniformity, first of all, in the regions with distinct microscopic defects or inclusions. Thus, an increase in the locality of the indentation tests makes it possible to more objectively estimate the quality of the developed nanomaterials.
