A new method is proposed for evaluating the strain-strength properties of nanolayers of solid materials on polymers. The underlying idea of the method is analysis of parameters of the microrelief generated by strains in polymer films with a thin coating. We demonstrate that the yield strength and ductility of precious metals in uniaxial extension increase manifold if the thickness of the metal layer is less than 30 nm. A mechanism of the observed phenomena is suggested and discussed.
